Visit by Professor Maurice Stierl, 04/26/2023:

Professor Maurice Stierl, who leads the research group “The Production of Knowledge on Migration” at the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (Osnabrück University), zoomed into HQ136 to speak to us about the legal, political, and physical borders around and within what he coins “EUrope.” We thank him for his engaging lecture and insightful Q&A.

Visit by Professor Eunsong Kim, 04/19/2023:

Professor Eunsong Kim delivered a lecture titled “Colonially Bound | Immateriality Free: On the Expanded Distance Between Object and Image.” She presented the legal case around claims to a daguerreotype of an enslaved African American in Harvard’s archival collection and traced the politics and colonial legacies of museum institutions. During the Q&A, participants engaged in a lively discussion around imaginaries for more just museums spaces. We thank Professor Kim for her dedicated lecture and thoughtful engagement with our participants.

Visit by Intersectional Black European Studies Group, 04/12/2023:

The leaders of the Intersectional Black Studies Group (InBEST) - Prof. Dr. Maisha M. Auma, Dr. Denise Bergold-Caldwell, Katja Kinder, and Peggy Piesche, alongside the host and Yale Professor Fatima El-Tayeb - spoke about the origins and goals of their work. Their intiative aims to establish Intersectional Black Studies in a European context and situate it in Germany and its European neighbors. As part of their project, InBEST is starting a Digital Black Europe Archive this summer, whose goal is to preserve and actively contribute to Black European knowledge production. More information on InBEST will soon be published on its own website.

Visit by Dr. Houria Bouteldja, 04/06/2023:

Dr. Houria Bouteldja joined us for the largest event in our speaker series thus far with over fifty participants. Her talk “France and Whiteness: breaking with the collaboration of race” unfolded racial hierarchies and alliances in France, the role of indiviual, societal, and state responsibility in the ongoing project of racism, and decolonial resistances. We thank her for her patience and generosity in thought.  We also thank Dr. Fadila Habchi for her meticulous translations.

Visit by Dr. Piro Rexhepi, 03/29/2023:

Dr. Piro Rexhepi gave an invigorating talk titled “White Enclosures: Racial Capitalism and Coloniality along the Balkan Route” and joined us for a generative Q&A on race relations, sexual configurations, and the role of Europe in the Balkans. We thank him for his many insights.

Visit by Dr. Anna Younes, 03/08/2023:

Dr. Anna Younes was the first in a series of speakers on the topic of “Race, Migration, and Coloniality in Europe.” Her presentation was titled Geopolitics and Racial Configurations: Race, Lebensraum, and Conspiratorial Racism. Her lecture critically engaged with the conjuncture of anti-Semitism, anti-Palestinian racism, and anti-Blackness. We thank Dr. Younes for her engaging lecture and her thoughtful responses to audience questions.

Visit by Professor Jeanette Jouili, 12/07/2022:

Jeanette Jouili is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Religion at Syracuse University. As part of her book project, Professor Jouili presented one of her chapter drafts to the working group. Broadly, her work stirred a discussion about the position of Muslim artists and communities within a Prevent-era Britain. According to its website, Prevent is a “government-led, multi-agency Prevent programme [that] aims to stop individuals becoming terrorists and police play a key role.” We thank Professor Jouili for a wonderful last working group meeting for this semester.

Visit by Professor Naika Foroutan, 10/26/2022:

Naika Foroutan is Professor of Social Sciences at Humboldt University in Berlin and Co-Director of the German Center for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM). During her visit to our working group, she presented the findings of Germany’s first National Discrimination and Racism Monitor, which her center conducted. Since its publication in 2022, this study has critically informed conversations about the manifestations of racism, the population’s awareness of racism, and approaches to mitigating racism in Germany. Professor Foroutan’s presentation was followed by a lively discussion with our working group and dinner. We thank her for her time and invaluable insights.
